Cahoots

By Rick Johnston

Directed by Tom Rushen

November 5, 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20

Successfully produced in both London and New York, this outrageously funny comedy with murder brings the problem of big-city crime home with a farcical vengeance. Those involved are two "yuppie" couples who, though obsessed with the dangers of urban living, are hardly prepared for the "crime wave" that they bring upon themselves—and well apart from the feared denizens of the mean streets outside their triple-locked apartments. "It combines rapid-fire dialogue with a farcical plot." —Show Business. "…diverting comedy with murder…" —NY Times.

Natalya Petrovna, once wooed and won over by the rich landowner Arkady Sergeyevich, has now suffered a long and frustrating marriage. She has taken comfort in the love of Michel, a family friend, but even he has come to represent the same kind of boredom Natalya finds with her doting husband. Instead, it is Aleksey, her son's dashing twenty-one-year-old tutor, whom Natalya now desires. Natalya's beautiful and energetic ward Vera, though, can't help but compete for Aleksey's affections, being so close to him in age. How to position herself between Aleksey and Vera, then, becomes Natalya's obsession during the hot summer days, and when she learns that a neighboring landowner wants to marry Vera, Natalya seizes the chance to remove the only obstacle between her and seducing away the young Aleksey. Heartbreaking though the consequences may be for Vera—her suitor, you see, is almost 60—Natalya goes to increasingly dangerous ends to encourage the match while simultaneously wooing Aleksey. Risking her home, her marriage and even the only man who's ever sworn to stand by her, proves to be too much.

Picnic

By William Inge

Directed by Frank Gaffney

Jan. 8, 9, 15, 16, 22, 23 at 8pm Jan. 10, 17 at 2pm

The play takes place on Labor day Weekend in the joint backyards of two middle-aged widows. The one house belongs to Flo Owens, who lives there with her two maturing daughters, Madge and Millie, and a boarder who is a spinster school teacher. The other house belongs to Helen Potts, who lives with her elderly and invalid mother. Into this female atmosphere comes a young man named Hal Carter, whose animal vitality seriously upsets the entire group. Hal is a most interesting character, a child of parents who ignored him, self-conscious of his failings and his position behind the eight ball. Flo is sensitively wary of temptations for her daughters. Madge, bored with being only a beauty, sacrifices her chances for a wealthy marriage for the excitement Hal promises. Her sister, Millie, finds her balance for the first time through the stranger's brief attention. And the spinster is stirred to make an issue out of the dangling courtship that has brightened her life in a dreary, minor way.

The esteemed and retired Dr. Conrad Bering has selected several individuals for group therapy. On this particular evening the members of the Group gather as usual in Dr. Bering's office only to discover that the doctor has been murdered. To call the police will subject them to reckless scandal, relentless investigation and turn them all into fodder for the hungry media, so a collective decision is made to try to solve the murder themselves. Act One is a "whodunit" and by its end the audience knows the murderer. Act Two becomes a suspense play… will the characters figure it out? Will someone actually be "getting away with murder?"

The Dinner Party

By Neil Simon

Directed by Dan Friedman

October 24, 2008 thru November 8, 2008

Here is a decidedly French dinner party served up in a chaotic mode that only a master of comedy could create. Five people are invited to dine at a first rate restaurant in Paris. They do not know who the other guests will be or why they have been invited. Tossed together in a private dining room, they have a sneaking suspicion that this unorthodox dinner party will forever change their lives. The evening is filled with playful antics, sudden zaniness and masterful comic dialogue as the mystery unfolds. John Ritter and Henry Winkler starred in the wildly successful Kennedy Center production and on Broadway.

"A blizzard of one liners.... The audience can bank on some good laughs."---N.Y. Daily News.

"Frequently hilarious but also dangerously serious.... An invitation you [will be] glad you accepted."---N.Y. Post.

Cry Havoc

By Allan R. Kenward

Directed by Richard Mancini

July 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, 20, 25 & 26 of 2008

This is the story of nurses on Bataan. In a sort of dugout subjected to gunfire the individual characters emerge to offer a collective reaction to war. These include the strong minded doctor, her restrained and poised assistant and the volunteer nurses: a vacuous Southern girl, a swaggering bully, a couple of timid aesthetes, an ex burlesque girl and the inevitable spy. This is a compelling, caustic revelation of human beings under fire.

Durang 4.1

By Christopher Durang

Directed by Karina Ramsey

April 25, 26, 27, May 2, 3, 4, 9 &10 of 2008

The Darien Players present 4 one-act plays by Christopher Durang:

MRS. SORKEN
Mrs. Sorken is an introductory, welcoming speech to the audience in which the over-articulate, somewhat dotty Mrs. Sorken explains her likes and dislikes about theatre, her views on the meaning of life, and what the audience can expect to see this evening.

FOR WHOM THE SOUTHERN BELLE TOLLS
A parody of Tennessee Williams wonderful play The Glass Menagerie. In this version Amanda is frustrated with her over-sensitive, hypochondriac son named Lawrence. Lawrence’s more “normal” brother, Tom brings home a female caller, Ginny, from the warehouse he works at, and Lawrence is overwhelmed by this butch girl who is deaf and shouts all the time.

A STYE IN THE EYE
Stye of the Eye is a giddy parody of Sam Shepard plays, especially Lie of the Mind, Fool for Love, a bit of Curse of the Starving Class, with bits of John Pielmier’s Agnes of God and David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross thrown in for good measure. A parody of a kind of drama – poetic, symbolic drama seeped in the myth of the American west.

THE ACTOR’S NIGHTMARE
This play was inspired by the popular dream that an actor must perform in a play that they have inexplicably never been to rehearsals for, and for which they know neither the lines nor the plot. George is an accountant who wanders onto an empty stage, not certain where he is or how he got there. The stage manager informs him he’s the understudy, and must go on in a few minutes. George doesn’t know his name, doesn’t think he’s an actor (“I think I’m an accountant”), and has no idea what play he’s supposed to do.

Children

By A.R. Gurney

Directed by Robert Cusack

May 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 18 & 19 of 2007

The action takes place in the summer home of a wealthy "WASP" family on a resort island off the New England coast. In residence are a middle-aged but still attractive widow; her divorced daughter; and her prep school teacher son and his wife. Their pleasant regimen is interrupted by two jarring events: the mother's announcement that she plans to marry an old family friend and the unexpected arrival of her younger son and his family. The younger son, "Pokey," has always been out of step with the rest of the family, and while he remains a shadowy offstage figure throughout, it is quickly evident not only that (for reasons of his own) he objects to his mother's remarriage and to the plans which his siblings have hatched for the house, but also that he can, and will, stop them. Much that has been repressed in them rises to the surface, and they are forced to painful (yet often funny) examinations of their own rather sterile lives.

Biloxi Blues

By Neil Simon

Directed by Frank Gaffney

January 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 26 & 27 of 2007

In a unique situation The Darien Players is teaming with The Acting Company of Greenwich and Curtain Call, Inc. to present the Neil Simon trilogy - a semi-autobiographical set of plays about the Jerome family: "Brighton Beach Memoirs," "Biloxi Blues" and "Broadway Bound" - over the course of the upcoming season. All three plays will be directed by Frank Gaffney and will feature the same actors where appropriate.

We will be presenting the 1985 Tony Award winner for Best Play, "Biloxi Blues," the second play in the continuing saga of Eugene Morris Jerome, alter ego of the youthful Neil Simon. When we last met Eugene, he was coping with adolescence in 1930's Brighton Beach, Brooklyn. Here Eugene gets his introduction to the world beyond Coney Island by enlisting in the US Army in 1943, during World War II. Eugene is sent to basic training at Biloxi, Mississippi where he must live with a variety of fellow soldiers from all walks of life, while also enduring the whims of a mentally unstable drill sergeant. And, yes, the ubiquitous journal is still with him, as he continues to faithfully record his adolescent musings. Eugene and five other assorted enlisted men suffer under their sergeant, confront the daily "mess" served up in the mess hall, join together in a visit to a local prostitute and, generally, become adults. For the first time, Eugene confronts the degradation of anti-Semitism; and, for the first time, he falls in love. "A fine comedy, and another step in the process of making Simon neither so simple, nor so simplistic." N.Y. Post. "Joyous and unexpectedly rewarding." N.Y. Times. "A play that rings with a newer, deeper, sweeter truth." N.Y. Magazine.

The Rimers of Eldritch

By Lanford Wilson

The Rimers of Eldritch

Directed by Peter Barbieri, Jr.

October 27, 28, 29, November 3, 4, 5, 10 & 11 of 2006

A man has been murdered. The mystery is, who he is, who murdered him and what were the circumstances? And to solve it, Wilson looks at the outsides and insides of his tiny, Middle Western town. He is grasping the very fabric of Bible Belt America, with its catchword morality ("virgin," "God-fearing") and its capability for the vicious. He senses the rhythm of its life and the cruelty it can impose. He understands the speech patterns of its loveless gossips, its sex-hungry boys, its compassionless preachers, its car-conscious blondes. In the end his portrait of Eldritch is full length, and the truth of its revelations will be pondered long after the stage lights have dimmed and the play has ended.

Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

By Tennessee Williams

Directed by Frank Gaffney

January 13, 14, 15, 20, 21, 22, 27, 28 of 2006

In a plantation house, a family celebrates the sixty-fifth birthday of Big Daddy, as they sentimentally dub him. The mood is somber, despite the festivities, because a number of evils poison the gaiety: greed, sins of the past and desperate, clawing hopes for the future spar with one another as the knowledge that Big Daddy is dying slowly makes the rounds. Maggie, Big Daddy’s daughter-in-law, wants to give him the news that she’s finally become pregnant by Big Daddy’s favorite son, Brick, but Brick won’t cooperate in Maggie’s plans and prefers to stay in a mild alcoholic haze the entire length of his visit. Maggie has her own interests at heart in wanting to become pregnant, of course, but she also wants to make amends to Brick for an error in judgment that nearly cost her her marriage. Swarming around Maggie and Brick are their intrusive, conniving relatives, all eager to see Maggie put in her place and Brick tumbled from his position of most-beloved son. By evening’s end, Maggie’s ingenuity, fortitude and passion will set things right, and Brick’s love for his father, never before expressed, will retrieve him from his path of destruction and return him, helplessly, to Maggie’s loving arms.

Biography

By S. N. Behrman

Directed by Catherine Lindsey, Robert Cusack & Bob Louis

March 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 18 & 19 of 2005

Marion Froude leaves her village for New York and becomes a popular portrait painter. Into her life comes Dickie Kurt, the ardent editor of a magazine hungry to publish her autobiography. The prospect dismays her former lover, stiff and cautious Bunny Nolan, for he wants to be a United States Senator. He and his prospective father in law exercise their influence to kill the story, and eventually Marion burns it in the stove of her studio. Dickie is a vindictive editor, chiefly because his father, a striking coal miner, was killed as he stood innocently with his little son on the outskirts of a riot. He raves and rants in the best manner of the comfortable radicals, and despite Marion's cool counsel and warm embraces he goes away, leaving her to pursue her casual, contented and optimistic career.

The Curious Savage

By John Patrick

Directed by Joel Fenster & Dan Friedman

May 1, 2, 3, 4, 9, 10, 11, 16 & 17 of 2003

Mrs. Savage has been left ten million dollars by her husband, and wants to make the best use of it, in spite of the efforts of her grown-up stepchildren to get their hands on it. These latter, knowing that the widow's wealth is now in negotiable securities, and seeing they cannot get hold of it, commit her to a "sanatorium" hoping to "bring her to her senses." But Mrs. Savage is determined to establish a fund to help others realize their hopes and dreams. In the sanatorium she meets various social misfits, men and women who just cannot adjust themselves to life, people who need the help Mrs. Savage can provide. In getting to know them, she realizes that she will find happiness with them, and plans to spend the rest of her life as one of them. But when the doctor tells her there is no reason why she should remain, she hesitates to go out into a hard world where people seem ready to do anything for money. The self-seeking stepchildren are driven to distraction by their vain efforts to browbeat Mrs. Savage, but she preserves her equanimity and leads them on a merry chase. At last her friends conspire to get rid of her stepchildren, and through their simple belief in the justice of her cause, they enable Mrs. Savage to carry out her plans. The last scene, a farewell party, is a delightful fantasy where each "guest" in the sanatorium realizes at last some hopeless dream for something he was never able to realize. The dominant mood is high comedy, and the audience is left with a feeling that the neglected virtues of kindness and affection have not been entirely lost in a world that seems motivated at times only by greed and dishonesty.

Directed by Joel Fenster, Dan Friedman & Catherine Lindsey

February 20, 21, 22, 23, 28, March 1, 2, 8 & 9 of 2003

Suggested by Henry James' novel Washington Square
The background of the play is New York in the 1850s and the basic story tells of a shy and plain young girl, Catherine Sloper, who falls desperately in love with a delightful young fortune hunter. Catherine's lack of worldliness prevents her from realizing that the young man proposing to her is not entirely drawn to her by her charm. Catherine's father, a successful doctor, sees through the fortune hunter and forbids the marriage, but his daughter proposes an elopement which fails to materialize because the young man knows most of her expected fortune will go elsewhere if he marries her. Catherine retires into a little world of her own. But the fortune hunter turns up once more and again proposes to her. For a moment, Catherine leads him to believe that she will accept him, but when he calls by appointment, she locks the door, blows out all the lights and allows him to realize that she will not be fooled for the second time.

By Agatha Christie

Directed by Robert Cusack

November 1, 2, 3, 8, 9, 10, 15, 16 & 17 of 2002

Three One-Act plays from Dame Agatha Chrsitie.

"The Rats" -- A man arrives at a flat in answer to a message, and then a woman arrives by another invitation. They are lovers. In the midst of this perplexity there enters an odd fellow who had known the woman's first husband very well. After he leaves, they find themselves locked in. The fellow, who correctly guessed that the woman killed her first husband, has set the stage to trap them like rats.

"The Patient" -- A woman is lying in a hospital completely paralyzed following a fall from a balcony. Did she faint or was she pushed? The inspector, who realizes that the patient is not physically but psychically traumatized, cleverly determines that murder was intended and uses a devious ruse to trap the guilty party.

"Afternoon at the Seaside" -- The scene is a seashore resort. Among the characters: a siren in a bikini, ogling men and envious women. The undercurrents are perfect for theft. At the very end the wanton siren emerges as a policewoman who solves the otherwise perfect crime.

This delightful comedy tells of what happens in a very conventional English home when appealing little Mr. Pim, who has so much trouble with names, drops in one day on a small matter of business. The business is soon forgotten when Mr. Pim announces that the former husband of the lady of the house, thought to be deceased, is alive. Since the lady is married now, she is a bigamist. Her present husband, always a trifle pompous and tyrannical, is upset no end. Then Mr. Pim passes by again; this time he confesses that he confused two names and it is safe to assume that the lady's first husband is dead, as they originally believed. Without telling her husband, the lady uses the knowledge as a weapon not only to get what she wants in the house but to force her husband to permit his niece to marry the young artist who loves her.

The Cocktail Hour

By A.R. Gurney

Directed by Catherine Lindsey

January 28, 29, 30, February 4 & 5 of 1994

The time is the mid '70s, the place a city in upstate New York. John, a playwright, returns to his family's house, bringing with him a new play which he has written about them. His purpose is to obtain their permission to proceed with production, but his wealthy, very proper parents are cautious from the outset. For them the theatre is personified by the gracious, comforting era of the Lunts and Ina Claire, and they are disturbed by the bluntness of modern plays. And there is also John's sister, Nina, to contend with, although her reservations have to do with the fact that John has given her character such a minor role. Their confrontation takes place during the ritual of the cocktail hour, and as the martinis flow so do the recriminations and revelations, both funny and poignant. In the end it is evident that what John has written is closer to the truth than his family has heretofore been willing to admit, and that beneath their WASP reserve his parents and siblings are as beset with uncertainties and frustrations as their presumed "inferiors." But while they seem shackled by the past, and tantalized by an alien future, the ties which bind them do prevail—surmounting disputes and disappointments and, with unfailing warmth and humor, converting pained resignation into cautious but hopeful anticipation.

Inherit The Wind

By Jerome Lawrence & Robert E. Lee

Directed by Robert Mills

October 17, 18, 19, 25 & 26 of 1991

In the middle of the hot summer of 1925, the famous "Monkey Trial" took place in Dayton, Tennessee, a small town of about eighteen hundred people in the Cumberland Valley. A young teacher named John Scopes stood accused of violating the Butler Act, a measure passed earlier that year to restrict the teaching of evolution in state-funded schools. The defense featured the famous attorney Clarence Darrow, and the prosecution starred the celebrated orator, populist, and three-time Democratic presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan. Nearly two hundred reporters descended upon the town, including H. L. Mencken of the Baltimore Evening Sun (which helped underwrite Scopes' defense). Newspapers and magazines carried innumerable articles and cartoons on the case, and telegraph operators wired stories to Europe and Australia. For the first time news of an American trial was nationally broadcast by radio, while thousands of people came to Dayton itself to take in what became a virtual carnival, complete with sideshows.

My Giddy Aunt

By Ray Cooney & John Chapman

Directed by BT McNicholl

February 18, 1989

Set in Lady Eppingham's house in India, this play has all the superb comedy that one would expect from the masters of farce, plus a good measure of thrills. The eccentric but aristocratic Lady Eppingham lives in a world of fantasy and past glory of the Empire, whilst the running of her tea estate is left in the hands of her unscrupulous nephews. But when Beatrice Horrocks, Lady Eppingham's half sister of decidedly lowly birth arrives to claim her right to manage the estate, the situation changes and in a series of hilariously funny scenes, she slowly but surely sorts everything out and unmasks the schemes of her nephews.

The Dining Room

By A.R. Gurney Jr.

Directed by Luke Yankee

April 26, 27, 28, 29 & 30 of 1988

The play is set in the dining room of a typical well-to-do household, the place where the family assembled daily for breakfast and dinner and for any and all special occasions. The action is comprised of a mosaic of interrelated scenes—some funny, some touching, some rueful—which, taken together, create an in-depth portrait of a vanishing species: the upper-middle-class WASP. The actors change roles, personalities and ages with virtuoso skill as they portray a wide variety of characters, from little boys to stern grandfathers, and from giggling teenage girls to Irish housemaids. Each vignette introduces a new set of people and events; a father lectures his son on grammar and politics; a boy returns from boarding school to discover his mother's infidelity; a senile grandmother doesn't recognize her own sons at Christmas dinner; a daughter, her marriage a shambles, pleads futilely to return home, etc. Dovetailing swiftly and smoothly, the varied scenes coalesce, ultimately, into a theatrical experience of exceptional range, compassionate humor and abundant humanity.
